What it is

Medical acupuncture, not energy work.

Contemporary medical acupuncture uses thin needles inserted at neuroanatomically-relevant points to influence the nervous system, reduce trigger-point activity, and modulate pain signalling. It's grounded in modern neuroscience, not traditional Chinese medicine theory.

Dr. Lisa Clarke is certified in Contemporary Medical Acupuncture through McMaster University. Sessions integrate seamlessly with chiropractic care, often layered into a single visit when the case calls for it.

  • Performed by Dr. Lisa Clarke (McMaster Contemporary Medical Acupuncture certified)
  • Evidence-based, strong support for tension headaches, neck and low back pain, and chronic musculoskeletal pain
  • Integrates with chiropractic visits when both are appropriate
  • Insurance note: because our practitioner is a chiropractor performing acupuncture, treatment is billed under the chiropractic portion of your benefits
What it helps

The cases acupuncture is best for.

Tension headaches

One of the strongest evidence bases for acupuncture. Trigger-point release in the upper neck and shoulders can dramatically reduce headache frequency.

Neck & shoulder pain

Especially for chronic muscle tension and trigger points that haven't responded to manual therapy alone.

Low back pain

Often a useful adjunct when chronic low back pain has plateaued with chiropractic care alone. Targets specific trigger-point patterns.

What to expect

Thin needles. Mild sensation. 15–30 minutes.

Most patients are surprised by how minimal the sensation is. The needles are very thin (much thinner than the ones used for blood draws), and the most common feeling is a brief 'twitch' or warmth as the needle is inserted near a trigger point. Once placed, you rest with the needles in for 10–20 minutes.

Some patients feel changes immediately, particularly headache patients. Most need 3–5 sessions to see meaningful, lasting results.

About acupuncture

Most insertions are barely noticeable. Some points produce a brief twitch sensation as the needle reaches a trigger point, that's usually a sign it's the right spot. Pain itself is rare and short-lived.

Booked for a running gait analysis before a half marathon. The video breakdown of my stride was eye-opening and the exercises sorted out the knee pain that kept derailing my training.
